Introducing Our New Medical Weight Management Program at PHI
While we love helping you look your best on the outside, we know true confidence starts from within. In our daily conversations at the clinic, we keep hearing the same quiet frustrations from so many of you—struggles with stubborn weight, inflammation, and the unpredictable metabolic changes that go hand-in-hand with aging or perimenopause.
We hear you, and we’re excited to share that we’ve created a program to support your journey.
We are officially launching our new Medical Weight Management Program at our Marda Loop clinic, led by our experienced Nurse Practitioner, Carly, and Registered Nurse, Abbie.
Why a Medical Approach Makes a Difference
For years, the weight-loss industry has pushed the same tired advice: just eat less and move more. But if you've ever tried a strict diet, you know it's never that simple.
When you try to lose weight by cutting calories, your biology fights back. It's a survival mechanism called metabolic adaptation. Your body essentially thinks it's starving, so it slows down your metabolism to conserve energy. At the same time, it spikes your hunger hormones (like ghrelin) and drops the hormones that tell your brain you're full (like leptin). Suddenly, you're fighting your own biology just to keep the scale from moving up.
Add age to the mix, and things get even more complicated. During perimenopause and menopause, your body's relationship with insulin fundamentally changes, which can trigger systemic inflammation and cause your body to stubbornly hold onto weight (especially around the midsection), no matter how "clean" your diet is or how often you hit the gym. You can't out-diet a hormonal or metabolic imbalance. That’s exactly why a one-size-fits-all plan usually fails in the long run.
When those traditional diets stop working, it’s easy to feel like you’re doing something wrong. But instead of blaming you for not trying hard enough, a medical approach allows us to address the biological root causes (e.g., insulin resistance, hormonal shifts, or metabolic roadblocks), so we can help your body function the way it's supposed to.
What to Expect at Your Pre-Consultation
Your journey starts with a private, judgment-free consultation. Here's what we’ll cover:
Understanding your goals: We’ll have an open discussion to learn about your interest in the program and your goals.
Program details: We’ll share what our Medical Weight Management program includes, from monthly check-ins to nutritional and lifestyle coaching, and monitoring bloodwork as needed.
Looking at the big picture: After learning about your health history and goals, our program Nurse will determine whether you are a preliminary candidate for the program.
Deciding what's best for you: There’s no pressure to decide your next steps at the consultation. We’re here to support patients in making their own confident, informed decisions.
Full metabolic panel: For preliminary candidates interested in our program, a lab requisition will be provided. Our Medical Director will review the results to determine whether you are medically eligible for the program.
What to Expect During the Program
Building your plan: We don’t do cookie-cutter programs. Our Medical Director will develop a customized plan that fits your lifestyle and goals.
Real-life guidance: We’ll talk through nutritional and lifestyle strategies that are realistic and manageable.
Medical support: If medically appropriate, we’ll discuss Health Canada-approved prescription medications that can support your journey.
Starting strong: Our program Nurse provides additional support during the first month, helping patients adjust to nutrition and lifestyle changes and manage potential side effects.
Monthly monitoring: After the first month, check-ins are scheduled monthly. Our program Nurse is also available to meet more frequently if desired.
Aesthetic concern management: Weight loss can be accompanied by changes in skin quality and increased skin laxity. We can provide medical-grade skincare recommendations and education about appropriate aesthetic treatments.
Safe, Supervised, and Tailored to You
As a medical clinic, we have access to advanced devices and tools, including prescription medication when medically appropriate.
For patients interested in a medically supported approach, our Medical Director will review their full medical history and bloodwork to determine which prescription medication(s) are appropriate. During an in-person appointment, we will share the options medically appropriate for you and provide the necessary information for you to make an informed decision.
We also want to set realistic expectations. Everyone’s body is different, which means we don't promise specific numbers or guarantee a certain amount of weight loss. Instead, we promise ongoing medical supervision, regular check-ins, and a supportive team dedicated to helping you feel healthier and more vibrant.
