PHI-Y-I: The Inside Scoop on Fibroblast Plasma Pens
We often get asked about fibroblast plasma pens and how they compare to the treatments we offer at PHI. While we love all things beauty and continuously monitor the latest developments in skincare, our primary responsibility is to offer our patients the safest, most effective, and up-to-date procedures.
Recently, we had a patient visit the clinic seeking to reverse the negative effects of a plasma pen treatment, which prompted us to look into the trend more closely.
How the Treatment Works
The plasma pen claims to tighten skin tissue and is heavily promoted for cosmetic treatments like eye lifts, wrinkle tightening, and the removal of moles or skin tags.
The device uses a tiny probe that ionizes oxygen and nitrogen in the air to create an electrical arc on the skin. This causes superficial tissue dehydration and carbonization, leaving tiny “dots” across the treatment area. The resulting heat releases into the dermis to stimulate skin fibroblast cells, claiming to generate new collagen and elastin for a tightening and lifting effect.
Health Canada Warnings and Known Risks
While the concept sounds intriguing, this procedure carries significant risks. There are numerous warnings against the treatment, most notably from Health Canada.
Unapproved Devices: The device is not Health Canada approved. Many providers source these pens from overseas and bring them across the border illegally.
Skin Damage: The treatment essentially burns holes into the skin, which is an inherently dangerous mechanism of action.
Severe Side Effects: Potential adverse reactions include pain, swelling, redness, hyperpigmentation, UV sensitivity, peeling, crusting, infection, and ironically, sagging skin (which we have actively seen and treated in our clinic).
Inadequate Training: Operators of these pens often receive their certification through a simple one-day course.
